Since the Mountain Law II of 2021, motorists driving in mountain areas must imperatively equip their vehicles with snow tires, or have in their trunk chains or snow socks. This obligation applies from November 1 to March 31, even if the roads are perfectly clear and it is not snowing. A fine of 135 euros is normally planned but this year again, there will be no sanction before the end of the year according to the Ministry of Transport.
Mountain areas in Béarn to be refined
In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques where it was necessary to refine the division of the zones concerned, the weather is indeed still at pedagogy.“We will continue to do educational checks only, explains the chief of staff of the prefect of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Théophile Delassus. The objective is to explain the meaning of this measure, to show how useful it can be during the snowy season, but this year we will not be carrying out repressive checks. There will be no punishment.”
It must be said that in the 64, after consultation with the mayors, a new order is still being waited to specify on which roads exactly the obligation applies inside the 28 municipalities identified
first in the department. Winter equipment would no longer be compulsory throughout a municipality, but only on roads that exceed the 1000m above sea level. In the Hautes-Pyrénées, a few additional months of tolerance will not be useless for motorists to apprehend the complex cutting
between the 25 municipalities where winter equipment is compulsory everywhere and the other 20 where the obligation only applies on certain roads.
