No parliamentary committee on ChatGPT

(Quebec) Liberals and Solidarity denounce the government’s decision not to hold a parliamentary commission on the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT.

They want to be able to hear from experts on the risks of this technology.

The Liberal Party deplores the lack of transparency of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) on the subject.

“The rise of artificial intelligence will cause a significant transformation of several employment sectors. It would have been relevant to study the issue carefully and inform parliamentarians about the issues that will arise from it,” said Liberal MP Madwa-Nika Cadet.

Last April, Liberal MP Frédéric Beauchemin posed a question in the chamber drafted by ChatGPT to highlight concerns about artificial intelligence.

It is the Liberal Party that is at the origin of the request for a commission. An initiative that comes on the heels of an outing by a thousand experts in artificial intelligence – including Yoshua Bengio and Elon Musk – who asked for a six-month break in research on this technology.

According to the solidarity deputy Haroun Bouazzi, this is an irresponsible decision. He maintains that jobs will disappear.

“We know that in the field of journalism, translation, law, education, there will be problems. We have to plan for them,” he said.

“There are risks for democracy and our personal data,” added the elected official.

The Minister of the Economy, Pierre Fitzgibbon, assures that the government is already consulting experts – including Mr. Bengio – on the subject.

“A commission was a means. We do it differently, but we will end up in the same place,” he said.

He adds that what emerges from the consultations will be public.
