“No one can compare to General de Gaulle”, reacted on franceinfo Jean-Louis Debré, former president of the National Assembly and of the Constitutional Council, after the declaration of candidacy of Eric Zemmour for the presidential election in a video published at midday, in a staging making reference to the appeal of June 18 of General de Gaulle.

“It shocked me, because you cannot rehabilitate Pétain and a few days later refer you to the general”, echoed Jean-Louis Debré. He also criticized the decision to broadcast this video on social networks but also the attitude of the candidate. “When you are a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, you look the French in the eye, there, he was reading a paper”, he blasted. On the merits either, the comparison with General de Gaulle, “who had only one passion, that of bringing together the French”, is distorted, according to Jean-Louis Debré.

“At no time, in any speech by de Gaulle, is there hatred or the desire to compartmentalize the French, and there we have a character who sows division, opposition and hatred.”

The former president of the Constitutional Council says he stayed “on [sa] hunger” at the end of this video. “We elect a president not on words but on a program, but tonight, we had no program, no proposal”, denounced Jean-Louis Debré who regrets that “the real problems” have not been discussed: “We find the themes of the traditional far right and that left me unhappy.”
