It will now be impossible for a non-member to shop at Costco. At the self-service checkout, store customers will be required to present photo ID, to confirm payment per month of the Costco subscription, as per information from Business Insider.

It is an increasingly popular action. However, the company points out that someone who doesn’t pay for the subscription shouldn’t have the same benefits as someone who pays.

“We don’t think it’s fair that non-Costco members receive the same benefits and prices as our members,” the company told Insider.

The Privilege membership card at Costco costs $60 for two individuals from the same address. For the Executive Privilege membership card, it’s $120.

The Business subscription allows you to add members at a cost of $60 for each of them.

Asking for proof of membership at checkouts could also reduce the risk of shoplifting, Costco added.

In Michigan, a Costco has already started asking for proof of identity when paying at the self-service checkout.
