Now widespread across the auto industry, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps are delighting millions of drivers who find automaker infotainment systems unappealing or user-friendly.
That of General Motors is considered by many, in particular the team of Car guide, as one of the best there is and that’s one of the reasons why the American giant plans to gradually eliminate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from its vehicles, starting with its future electric models. The agency Reuters reported the news on Friday.
The process will begin with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, which will hit the market starting this summer. GM’s idea is to use a next-generation infotainment and navigation system developed with help from Google to collect more data on how customers use and charge their electric vehicles.
Google Maps and the Google Assistant will be at the heart of the system, along with the ability to add popular apps such as Spotify and Audible.
Mike Himche, executive director of digital in-vehicle experience at GM, brings up a good point as well. “We have several new driver aids in development that will be more integrated with navigation and we don’t want their operation to depend on the driver having their phone in the vehicle. »
GM and Google have been teaming up since 2019 to develop the software foundations for infotainment systems that can better interact with other on-board technologies. We can think of the Super Cruise driving assistant, for example.
In the medium term, these systems would also work hand in hand with a variety of digital subscription services, a bet GM is making despite the reluctance of a majority of consumers to pay monthly or annual fees for extras or simple conveniences in their vehicles. .
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will remain available in conventional models equipped with a combustion engine (until no later than 2035, when GM intends to become 100% electric). Those who have already owned a GM electric vehicle, such as the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac LYRIQ, will be able to continue enjoying these apps as well.
