The matches follow and look alike for the Jaunards. Weighed down by a lack of pragmatism in the round of 16 first leg lost last weekend (10-29), the Clermontois once again showed a brave face in the Champions Cup without managing to materialize their highlights. The European adventure therefore ends logically for ASM, a new defeat (27-17) against the Leicester Tigers, Saturday April 16th.
An elimination which confirms a little more the new status of the Auvergnats. The Clermontois had not missed the meeting of the European quarter-finals (Challenge included) since the 2015-2016 season. Finished the costume of cador, for a few years already the ASM must be satisfied with a posture of outsider capable of a blow of brilliance here and there, little more. Last year, the Clermontois fell in the quarter-finals against the future Toulouse champion.
The young shoots, empowered for this meeting, like the explosive Baptiste Jauneau – 18, tenured in the scrum for the first time – nevertheless showed a good face. Failing to garner the confidence and certainties that accompany victories, the returned copy has the merit of being clean enough to serve as a basis for negotiating the end of the championship (8th in Top 14).
