With the popularity of online commerce, consumer habits have changed.

In front of the Best Buy located on Sainte-Catherine Street West, in downtown Montreal, around 8 a.m., no customers were waiting for the doors to open.

Archive footage shows that the situation has changed, while in previous years queues were seen on the commercial street.

Two employees of the American banner confirmed to TVA Nouvelles that the retail workforce will be lower than during previous Post-Christmas sales.

They add that several customers paid for their order overnight and will come pick it up during the day.

Two citizens met on Sainte-Catherine Street West say that it will be easier for consumers to make their purchases online.

According to the Quebec Retail Council, 56% of Quebecers want to take advantage of sales, while 22% of the population plans to do so online.

“We notice a slowdown which is initially due to the economic context […] but we also have an element which is important in recent months, the strike which affects many people and which affects the wallets of teachers and people in health,” underlined its general director, Damien Silès.

At the beginning of the afternoon, dozens of consumers had visited the big box store.

Fortunately, customers did not experience long queues.

“People know it, they are much more comfortable and ‘relaxed’ coming to shop. There is no longer this urgency to come at 6 a.m. and wait in line,” underlines an employee.
