The driver of the tanker truck that fatally hit a cyclist in downtown Montreal late Tuesday morning has been located and questioned by police, who say no criminal charges will be brought against him.
The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) specifies that the driver, a 53-year-old man, was met by its investigators on Tuesday evening. The investigation therefore does not mention a hit and run causing the death, but it is continuing, nevertheless.
The impact was reported around 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday to the 911 emergency call center. It occurred at the intersection of Avenue Papineau and Boulevard de Maisonneuve Est. The death of the cyclist, an elderly man in his forties, was found on the spot.
Various witnesses told investigators that the cyclist fell as he crossed the intersection.
The police had mentioned in the afternoon that after the impact, the tank truck involved had not stopped and had continued on its way south to take the Jacques-Cartier bridge towards Longueuil.
The police then speculated that the driver of the truck had not noticed the impact.
