He states, “This was our first foray into a game of this scale, and initially, we doubted our ability to pull it off. The most time-consuming aspect was creating an effective working environment for our large team and developing the game engine.”

This installment of Zelda stands apart from previous games not just due to its modernization but also thanks to Hidemaro Fujibayashi, a pivotal figure at Nintendo with roots in Capcom. He shared, “We began in January 2013 with the intent to redefine Zelda’s conventions. We analyzed gameplay mechanics to distinguish between the core elements of Zelda and those that had become mere traditions. After establishing the game’s overall direction, our entire team collaborated to identify what to change and what to keep.”

In their quest for innovation, Nintendo recognized that technology had evolved, allowing them to create a truly open world. Unlike earlier titles that confined players to interconnected areas, they embraced this new freedom. As Satoru Takizawa, the art director, highlights, the team relied heavily on testing and iteration rather than rigid documentation. This creative environment fostered wild ideas from young designers, leading to brainstorming sessions filled with unexpected concepts, which ultimately contributed to the fresh experience of Breath of the Wild.

To establish the foundation for this expansive open world, the Nintendo team created a 2D prototype reminiscent of the original Zelda on NES. Fujibayashi recalls, “Utilizing our 2D Zelda character models allowed us to refine gameplay elements. The successful testing of this prototype inspired us when transitioning to 3D, revealing both the potential and the considerable effort required to realize our vision.”

A Revolutionary Gameplay Experience

Upon its 2017 release, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild captivated players with its unique systemic gameplay. This innovative concept, while complex in name, revolves around the interaction of all game elements, creating dynamic experiences. Takuhiro Dota, the technical director, explained, “Through our prototypes, we discovered that if all elements could interconnect, it would lead to new experiences. This became the cornerstone of our development.”

This seamless interaction is evident throughout Breath of the Wild, though it required extensive testing to fine-tune. The team conducted numerous experiments to understand how different elements would affect both players and enemies. For instance, during thunderstorms, players must avoid using metal weapons to prevent electrocution, while cleverly using the environment can turn the weather into an advantage against foes.

With its stunning artistic direction, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild not only marked the launch of the Nintendo Switch but also redefined the gaming experience. Rarely does Nintendo release a new installment in the series alongside a console’s debut, making this adventure particularly special. The game’s design encourages exploration, allowing players to ascend cliffs and mountains for better navigation. Notably, the game world is immense, measuring twelve times larger than Twilight Princess, with Kyoto serving as a reference point for its size.
