Devastating tornadoes killed at least 25 people in Mississippi, United States, last weekend. The owners of a restaurant and their employees survived by hiding in the gigantic refrigerator of the establishment.

When the tornado hit the town of Rolling Fork in Mississippi (United States), residents had just a few minutes to seek shelter. For restaurant workers, salvation came from a huge refrigerator. “This fridge saved the lives of nine people. If God hadn’t warned us of a tornado, we would all have died in the restaurant that was right here”testifies a survivor.

“We cried, cried and also prayed”

It only takes a few seconds for customers to realize what is about to befall them. The owner then has a reflex: push everyone inside the cold room. “We were in the fridge. It was like we were being thrown all over the place. Everyone was on top of each other. We were trying to hang on to the shelves on the walls. (…) We shouted , cried and also prayed. Suddenly everything stopped”, says Tracy Harden, owner of Chuck’s Dairy Bar. The nine people in the cold room survived. Other residents were not so lucky. In Rolling Fork alone, 13 people lost their lives.
