How to welcome new inhabitants when the municipality lacks water? Nine towns in the country of Fayence, in the Var, have decided to freeze all building permit applications for the next five years.

The river is a small trickle of water that supplies the towns around Fayence (Var), a single source to supply all the houses clinging to the mountain. Several elected officials have therefore decided to block all construction. The shock announcement is notably assumed by the mayor of Callians (Var) which shows land where a project of eight houses was to be carried out; an impossible project for him. “Today, we are already struggling to ensure the water supply of those who are already there, so letting urbanization take hold, multiply, it would be neither audible nor responsible”explains Frédéric Cavallier, the mayor of the town.

Construction and real estate impacted

Nearly 30,000 people live in the nine municipalities concerned. The radical decision challenges the inhabitants. “I don’t think that’s a good thing, I think for everyone’s freedom it would be nice if everyone could go where they want”judges a resident. The elected officials also targeted the swimming pools. From now on, it is forbidden to fill or build new basins. But no construction means the end of construction sites, with the construction and real estate sector directly impacted.
