While Beijing announced on Monday that it had concluded its military exercises around Taiwan, Chinese warships and aircraft are still on Tuesday, April 11, near the island. China mobilized “military aircraft [mardi] morning and crossed the median line from the north, center and south”reported the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense, in reference to the unofficial border which separates mainland China from Taiwan.

The ministry said it counted nine Chinese warships and 26 aircraft around the island. The ships were detected around 11 a.m. (5 a.m. in Paris). China had nevertheless assured Monday that it had “successfully completed” its military exercises carried out since Saturday around the island, which it claims as one of its provinces which it has not yet succeeded in reuniting with the rest of its territory.

Taipei condemns these maneuvers

During these operations, simulated targeted strikes and an autonomous island encirclement exercise took place. This show of force came after the meeting on Wednesday in California between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy, to which Beijing had promised to react.

Tsai Ing-wen on Monday condemned the military maneuvers, hours after their official completion, saying China was using relations between Taipei and Washington as a “Excuse to launch military exercises, creating instability in Taiwan and the region”.
