(Montreal) Canadians are changing their time tonight as much of the country prepares to switch to daylight saving time.
In Quebec, as in most of the country, the time change occurs at 2 a.m. local time. Watches and clocks must be moved forward one hour.
The sale of alcoholic products in bars and restaurants will no longer be permitted at this time, since it will be 3 a.m. according to daylight saving time, indicated the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux in a press release.
True to form, the Montreal Fire Safety Service (SIM) reminded the population in a press release that the time change is “an opportunity to check the proper functioning of smoke alarms at home, in housing and with vulnerable people.
Residents of a home are responsible for ensuring that their smoke detector functions properly, even if owners have an obligation to provide this essential tool.
Yukon and most of Saskatchewan keep the same time year-round.
Canadians can thank an Ontario golf enthusiast from Thunder Bay for pioneering the idea of daylight saving time in the country.
In 1908, the towns of Port Arthur and Fort William – now Thunder Bay – introduced seasonal time difference for July and August.
A decade later, during World War I, it expanded to much of the country in order to increase production.
