Qualified at the last minute for the round of 16 of the African Cup of Nations, Cameroon did not see its star shine any longer. Opposed to Nigeria in the first shock at this stage of the competition, Saturday January 27, he was beaten (2-0). It is therefore the Super Eagles who will see the quarter-finals, with the Angolans as opponents, who defeated Namibia (3-0) a little earlier.
Nigeria too strong for Cameroon
Heart to unite, tirelessly press the first Cameroonian boosters and take the advantage in the first period. So much heart to turn back after the break and maintain this precious goal in advance despite the opposing attacks. Nigeria’s recipe worked against Cameroon who were far too technically inconsistent.
José Peseiro’s men, who finished first in their group, followed the example of their number 9: Victor Osimhen. The former Lille player, and now Naples player, delivered a remarkable performance, increasing the number of defensive runs, offering deep solutions and jumping at the slightest opportunity to put Fabrice Ondoa, the opposing goalkeeper, in difficulty.
The first alert was from Semi Ajayi, who scored a first goal – logically refused after video refereeing for offside – following two hazardous outings from Ondoa (9th). We had to wait until the 36th minute to see the lock blown for the first time. Served by Osimhen, who had just stolen the ball from Gonzalez’s feet in front of the area, Lookman opened the scoring. He definitively snuffed out any Cameroonian hopes by successfully taking over Bassey’s cross at the end of the match (90th).
The Gelson Dala – Fredy duo carries Angola
A little earlier, Gonçalves’ Angola won (3-0) against Namibia, surprise of the competition. The affair, however, seemed to be off to a bad start for the Palancas Negrasreduced to 10 from the 17th after the red conceded by their goalkeeper. But the hyperactivity and accuracy of Angolan captain Fredy, a decisive double passer, and the realism of winger Gelson Dala, turned the match around in four minutes. This was followed by a double from Gelson Dala (38th, 42nd) and the expulsion of Namibian central defender Haukongo (second yellow in the 40th).
Shortly after the hour mark, Mabululu tripled the lead and sent his country to the quarter-finals for the third time in its history. Angola has never scored three goals in the knockout phase of the CAN.
