Nicolas Sarkozy pours out his divorce with Cécilia as rarely: “The ordeal”…

France 2 broadcast on May 3, 2022 an exciting documentary on the first weeks of a newly elected president. Hundred Days, title of the program and the expression on the beginnings of a presidency, allows us to see behind the scenes of this fundamental period of the mandate. The journalists and political experts Patrice Duhamel and Gabriel Le Bomin notably collected the confidences of three former Presidents of the Republic, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing for his last interview, François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy. The latter thus returned to moments that mix private and public life, since he divorced Cecilia née Ciganer, only a few months after her inauguration.

Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife at the time Cécilia – she was previously married to Jacques Martin, father of her first two daughters – lived together the inauguration of the President of the Republic in 2007. She was there, with him like all their children, forming a model blended family photo. The first lady was even quickly called upon in the five-year term by working for the release of the Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor detained in Gaddafi’s Libya. But his role as first lady then suddenly transformed: On October 18, 2007, after numerous rumors relayed by the Swiss and then French press, divorce by mutual consent of the couple, pronounced by a judge three days before, is made public by the Élysée.

The one who is now married to Carla Bruni looks back on this chapter of his life: “The accidents of life… We didn’t choose them. But basically, I tried to tell the French people: I have an extraordinary job, but at the same time, I’m facing the same hardships as you. (…) I think that [les Français] saw me in the test, that they saw me in happiness and that they said to themselves: our president is like that, we like him, we don’t like him, but he is like that .“For the sake of transparency, the former head of state assumes to have spoken publicly about his divorce. According to him, this allowed him to create a link with the citizens.

Nicolas Sarkozy has been married three times and is the father of four children: Pierre (1985) and Jean (1986), born of his marriage to Marie-Dominique Culioli, Louis (1997), whom he had with Cécilia Attias – she is remarried with Richard Attias since 2008, and Giulia who celebrated her 10th birthday and whose mother is none other than the artist Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.
