He believes that “The right must assume the responsibility of governing.” Former President Nicolas Sarkozy calls on Republicans to work for “to appoint a right-wing Prime Minister”even though the New Popular Front came out on top in the legislative elections, in an interview with The FigaroFriday August 30.

Nicolas Sarkozy is putting all his weight behind changing the minds of the Republican leaders, who refuse any coalition or participation in the future government. On the contrary, he is proposing a “legislative pact” that includes right-wing measures, mainly on immigration and work. “I do not understand the position which consists of proposing a minimum programme to the President of the Republic, while claiming to want to remain outside the government team which would be in charge of implementing it!”he gets annoyed, convinced “that we only change things from the inside”.

Laurent Wauquiez, leader of the Republican Right group in the Assembly, raised his voice against Emmanuel Macron at the end of their second meeting on Wednesday at the Elysée Palace, as part of discussions on the next government. “The gravity of today’s situation requires a change of strategy and the assumption of the responsibility of governing”insists Nicolas Sarkozy, who recognizes “a divergence of strategic approach” with the potential candidate of the right in the 2027 presidential election.

This interview is being broadcast at a time when the name of Bernard Cazeneuve is circulating for Matignon. “This is not the solution that seems to me to be most in line with the centre of gravity of French politics, which is on the right.”believes Nicolas Sarkozy. Asked about the names of potential heads of government from the right, he responds that “If Xavier Bertrand wants to play his part in France’s recovery and avoid the crisis, it’s a good choice”.
