Niçoise Alizé Cornet, 37th in the world, achieves the feat! She beat world number 1, Iga Swiatek, in the third round of the London tennis tournament at Wimbledon in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. This is only the second time that Alizé Cornet has reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon.
“I don’t have the words…”
Alizé Cornet thus puts an end to the series of 37 consecutive wins from the Polish. Swiatek, who won Roland-Garros this year, had not lost a match since her second-round elimination in Dubai in February and had won all six tournaments she had played since. “I don’t have the words… It reminds me of my victory against Serena (Williams) eight years ago on this same N.1 court which brings me luck”commented hot the 32-year-old Frenchwoman. “I knew I could do it. Because if there was a moment to beat her, I knew it was on grass”, added Cornet who had reached the knockout stages of the Major on grass in 2014 by beating Serena Williams. But since then she had not passed the third round in London.
The 32-year-old Frenchwoman will face in the round of 16 Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (44th), winner of the Czech Barbora Krejcikova (13th).
