The Swede was hired by the Red Wings on Tuesday as vice president of hockey operations.

He joins another club legend, Steve Yzerman, who already serves as vice president and general manager in Detroit.

Lidstrom notably mentioned in videoconference on Tuesday that he wanted to “oversee the defense” of the club.

“I’m going to look at what we can do to improve or give advice to our players to become better. I will watch them play and I want to get to know them, discover their personalities. ”

His stats as a player speak for themselves. Nicklas Lidstrom was drafted in third round (53e overall) by Detroit in 1989. He’s won four Stanley Cups (1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008) and is the most point-scoring defenseman in franchise history. Lidstrom had been the captain for its last six seasons, from 2006 to 2012.

The Swede has never missed the playoffs once, helping the Red Wings qualify for the 20 seasons he played in Detroit.
