Joe Biden called the re-election of Daniel Ortega, acclaimed for the fourth time at the head of Nicaragua, a “comedy”. The American president is threatening this Central American country with sanctions.
Long before the announcement of the results of the presidential election in Nicaragua, supporters of Daniel Ortega celebrated, Sunday, November 7, in the streets of the capitale, Managua, the victory of their hero. An election played in advance in a country where democracy does not exist, its supporters still believe in their guide: “We are celebrating the continuity of the revolution. With it, we will have more social projects for the people.” The winning ticket of the ballot is composed of Daniel Ortega, president for the fourth time, and his wife Rosario Murillo, vice-president for four years. At 74, the 74-year-old former Sandinista guerrilla is one of the world’s oldest leaders.
He made Nicaragua a dictatorship. His enemies are numerous and his speeches always provocative: “Who punishes Europeans and Americans for their violation of human rights?” In Costa Rica, a neighboring country, 100,000 Nicaraguans have found refuge there and the anti-Ortega have denounced an electoral farce. The international community condemned the re-election of the Ortega couple. Russia and Venezuela only recognized their victory.
