Corey Perry says he began seeking help for his alcohol problems in the wake of his contract with the Chicago Blackhawks being terminated.
Perry released a statement Thursday apologizing to the Blackhawks, his family and fans, a day after his firing.
Without providing further details, Perry said the behavior that led to his firing was “inappropriate and wrong.”
The Blackhawks placed Perry on waivers Tuesday after an internal investigation found the veteran engaged in “unacceptable” conduct that violated the team’s code of conduct.
He was not claimed and saw his four million one-year contract come to an end.
Perry said in the statement that he was “disgusted” that his actions led to speculation and rumors that impacted other people.
He mentioned that his situation did not involve his teammates or their families.
The 38-year-old Ontario native began working with mental health and addiction experts.
A four-time All-Star, Perry delivered a 50-goal season in 2010-11 with the Anaheim Ducks.
In 1,273 games in the NHL, he totaled 421 goals and 892 points.
Perry played with the Montreal Canadiens in 2020-21, scoring nine goals and 21 points in 49 regular season games. He added four goals and 10 points in 22 games during the playoffs.
Perry also suited up for the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning.
