The ownership group of the NHL’s Utah team gave fans 20 choices to choose the team’s name.
Owner Ryan Smith told the Associated Press that the team will bill itself as Utah. During the inaugural season, players will wear uniforms with the name of the state on them. A name, logo and new colors will be revealed in time for the 2025-26 season, following work carried out by the company Doubleday & Cartwright.
“The Utah NHL team is owned by the community and we wanted to make sure that the members of that community had a say in choosing the name,” said Smith, whose group also owns the Jazz, in the NBA.
Options suggested in the survey are Frost, Ice, Powder, Mountaineers, Freeze, Mammoth, Black Diamonds, Blast, Caribou, Blizzard, Swarm, Hive, Outlaws, Yeti , Squall, Fury, Glaciers, Canyons, Venom and Utah HC, for Hockey Club.
Smith Entertainment Group purchased the Coyotes for $1.2 billion and received approval from the NHL to move the team to Salt Lake City. It will play at the Delta Center, which will be shared with the Jazz.
The club holds the sixth overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft.
