The National Hockey League suspended relations with Russia’s top league, the KHL, on Monday. A decision that could complicate things for teams hoping to sign a player playing in this circuit.

The NHL has ordered its teams to cut off all contact with KHL organizations and player agents based in Russia. A request which follows the suspension of the memorandum of understanding between the two circuits.
Teams can continue to trade with North American agents certified by the NHL Players’ Association, but it may be much more difficult to sign new agreements with KHL players.
The Daily Faceoff media was the first to report the news of the severing of ties between the NHL and the KHL. NHL Assistant Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed the information by email to The Associated Press.
This is the latest move by the NHL to break away from Russia following the invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin’s regime.
In a statement released last week, the NHL announced that it was suspending business relations with its partners in Russia and that it was suspending the dissemination of Russian-language information on its digital platforms. Broadcasting of NHL games in Russia has also been suspended.
