The NHL’s salary cap will receive another modest increase, once again increasing by US$1 million to $83.5 million.
The NHL and the Players Association announced the new salary cap for the 2023-24 season on Wednesday. This is the second consecutive season in which the cap has increased by $1 million, after remaining stable in the previous two campaigns.
This slight increase was a recommendation presented last week to the board of governors of the league. Chief executives were briefed on the decision earlier this week.
There was a small chance the cap would see a bigger hike if revenue from recent seasons had been enough to eclipse the amount players still owe owners due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It would have required players to collect the amount of money they win in escrow, and NHL Players’ Association executive director Marty Walsh said they weren’t willing to do that. TO DO.
The salary floor for next season has been set at $61.7 million.
