NHL | Ovechkin, Georgiev, Pettersson are the three stars of the week

Washington Capitals left wing Alexander Ovechkin, Colorado Avalanche goaltender Alexandar Georgiev and Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson were named National League Three Stars of the Week hockey on Saturday.

Ovechkin had two goals and four assists and helped the Capitals win all three games of the week.

The 37-year-old forward continued to leave his mark on the NHL’s history book by overtaking Gordie Howe for second in career goals.

Needing a brace to edge the former Detroit Red Wings star, Ovechkin scored twice in the Capitals’ 4-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night.

He had been held in four consecutive games after scoring a hat trick against the Chicago Blackhawks on Dec. 13. This hat-trick had allowed him to reach the plateau of 800 goals.

Georgiev led the league’s goaltenders with three wins, helping the Avalanche climb to third place in the Central Division.
