The 36-year-old Russian overtook the Czech Jaromir Jagr to climb on the prestigious podium where two Canadians are enthroned: the legendary Wayne Gretzky (894 goals) and the illustrious Gordie Howe (801).

He scored his goal in the third period on Tuesday to put his team ahead 3-2. It was his 37th goal this season, in 59 games.

The Russian, an idol of Capitals fans, is facing criticism for his close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his refusal to condemn his country’s invasion of Ukraine.
