The Toronto Maple Leafs organization was fined $100,000 for traveling on a day off under the collective agreement.
The National League made the announcement in a press release late Wednesday afternoon.
The Maple Leafs traveled to St. Louis on Dec. 26 for their Dec. 27 game against the Blues. However, according to the collective agreement between the NHL and the Players’ Association, December 24 and 26 are mandatory days off.
According to Sportsnet reporter Elliotte Friedman, the Leafs were originally scheduled to travel on Dec. 27, shortly after midnight. They left earlier, however, a little after 10:30 p.m. on December 26. The team reportedly argued with the players that since this is an approximately two-hour flight, it was better to fly at night rather than arriving in the wee hours. Still according to Friedman, the players would have accepted.
The NHL also announced that Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe was also fined for his conduct towards officials during that game in St. Louis, which the Leafs won by 5-4 in overtime.
The $125,000 will be donated to the NHL Foundation.
