(New York) Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin won the Lady Byng Trophy.
The National Hockey League (NHL) made the announcement Thursday.
The trophy is awarded each year to the player who demonstrates sportsmanship and exemplary conduct, while having a high level of play.
Slavin received just eight penalty minutes this season while leading the Hurricanes’ defensive brigade, which finished fourth in goals allowed (216).
The defenseman’s eight penalty minutes represent the lowest total among 81 NHL players who played at least 1,600 minutes on the ice during the season.
Slavin also won this trophy in 2020-21, in addition to finishing second in votes in 2021-22.
He is the second defenseman to win the Lady Byng twice, after Red Kelly, who received the honor four times (once as a forward).
The Denver native becomes the second American to win the Lady Byng Trophy twice, after Joe Mullen.
Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews and Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson were the other finalists.
The Professional Association of Hockey Journalists voted for the winner at the end of the season.
Slavin has six goals and 31 assists in 81 games. He became the team’s all-time leader among defensemen, with 223 assists and 272 points in 665 games.
