National Hockey League (NHL) teams will have an additional $4 million on payroll next season.
This is an appreciable increase, the course having not changed much in recent years. Sportsnet reporter Elliotte Friedman reported that the amount discussed at Monday’s governors’ meeting was $87.675 million.
At the beginning of October, Commissioner Gary Bettman indicated that preliminary discussions indicated a payroll ranging from $87 to $88 million. This will already make a difference compared to the amount of $83.5 million available to the 32 teams in 2023-2024.
An additional million dollars was given to teams before this season. The NHL justified this timid increase by the escrow deposits for which players must vouch due to the loss of income during the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Tuesday, the governors could discuss expansion, the Arizona Coyotes or even the allocation of the 2024 draft. According to various media sources, the famous Sphere in Las Vegas would be a possible destination.
