They have no more energy for activism. The NGO Letzte Generation (Last Generation), known for blocking car traffic, announced on Tuesday, August 6, the end of its shock actions in Austria. The organization says it has taken note of “the failure of society” to do without fossil fuels.

“We no longer see any prospect of success”the group explained in a press release, saying it had “protested despite violence, death threats and fines of tens of thousands of euros”The government must now “to assume” according to him the imminent death “billions of people” because of global warming.

Over the past two years, the actions of Letzte Generation have made headlines in the Alpine country. They have stuck their hands to the asphalt to block car traffic or thrown ink on paintings by masters to denounce the cooperation of museums with the oil industry. But this collective of around 280 people has encountered a firm reaction from the public authorities, who have filed numerous complaints, opposing their awareness-raising logic with the necessary maintenance of order.

Contacted by AFP, the NGO Letzte Generation deplores this forced stop in Austria, seeing it as “a warning”. On the other hand, it will continue its activities in Germany, where, linked to other civil disobedience movements in Europe, it is also very regularly talked about.
