The Washington football team indicated on Tuesday that it will unveil its new name on February 2, and in the same breath clarified that it will not be Wolves or RedWolves.
The Commanders, Defenders, Red Hogs, Armada, Presidents, Brigade, and the status quo – “Washington’s football team” – were other nominees.
Team President Jason Wright mentioned that Wolves and RedWolves were not selected as they are trademarks of other organizations. These picks were some of the most popular among the team’s supporters.
The new helmets and uniforms will retain the classic gold and burgundy hues of the dealership. A promotional video featuring the “W” logo has also been uploaded.
The organization abandoned its old name in July 2020 following persistent complaints – it was derogatory to First Nations people – and threats from its main sponsors. It then opted to use the Washington football team name, and retained it in 2021 as the administration underwent a major overhaul of its branding.
The Washington football team had also become the first franchise of the four major North American professional sports leagues to remove its name and logo referring to the First Nations. The Cleveland Indians, in Major League Baseball, were also renamed the Guardians.
The Atlanta Braves in Major League Baseball and Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL have chosen the status quo instead.
