(East Rutherford) Trevor Lawrence reached the end zone on the ground and the Jacksonville Jaguars remained hopeful of slipping into the playoffs on Thursday, beating the New York Jets 19-3.
In addition to rushing for 51 yards, Lawrence completed 20 of 31 passes for 229 yards.
In the AFC South, the Jaguars (7-8) came within a game of the Titans, who have lost their last four games.
Tennessee will play in Jacksonville at the conclusion of the regular season.
At the Jets, Zach Wilson has often been the subject of boos. He provided just 92 passing yards and gave way to Chris Streveler late in the third quarter.
Streveler was in the training squad at the start of the day.
It was the fourth straight loss for the Jets (7-8).
Quinnen Williams tackled Lawrence behind the line of scrimmage early in the game, setting a personal best with a 12e bag.
New York stole the ball on the play, but the Jets only got away with a 37-yard field goal from Greg Zuerlein. Andre Cisco had his say with a sack at Wilson’s expense, on a third down.
Riley Patterson quickly tied the game with a 32-yard field goal.
Early in the second quarter, a 96-yard rush on 16 plays was capped by a one-yard jump from Lawrence.
Patterson added a 45-yard field goal shortly before the end of the second quarter.
The Jets only had 66 yards in the first half. The boos came to a head when a Wilson “Hail Mary” failed into the hands of Devin Lloyd of the Jags, just before the whistle sent both clubs to the locker room.
Patterson hit the target from 41 yards midway through the third quarter. He scored again from 37 yards, with 3:46 to go in the final quarter.
Streveler briefly woke up the crowd with runs for 14, 10 and eight yards, on back-to-back plays.
In his primary duties, he finished the game with 90 passing yards.
The Jaguars will be in action again on New Year’s Day in Houston.
