NFL | Eight new helmet models for different positions approved

Eight new helmet models designed specifically for quarterbacks and linemen have been approved by the NFL and Players Association.

Two of these models were developed by Riddell for quarterbacks, while six others were designed for offensive and defensive linemen.

Quarterbacks will now have three helmet options specifically developed for their position, to reduce the power of impacts that can lead to concussions, including the Vicis Zero2 Matrix QB model unveiled last year. Riddell’s new models are called SpeedFlex Precision QB and Axiom 3D QB.

The Vicis Zero2-R Trench model designed for offensive and defensive linemen was the first to be developed for a specific position, in 2022.

In total, a record 12 new helmet models have been approved by the league and players’ union in preparation for the 2024 season.

Five of these models performed better than any helmet used in the NFL to date. The league, in partnership with the Players Association, commissions annual laboratory tests by biomechanical experts to evaluate which helmet models best reduce the severity of head hits.

“The pace of development has never been greater,” NFL executive director Jeff Miller told the Associated Press.

Miller, an executive vice president responsible for player health and safety, said providing players with the best possible protection is a priority, and he added that helmets should be developed for other specific positions during of the next few years.
