The 23-year-old was taken to hospital but suffered “non-life-threatening injuries”, according to the club. The Commanders added in a statement that staff members are present with Robinson at the hospital.

District of Columbia police reported a shooting in the northeast portion of the city and said they were looking for two possible suspects.

Robinson, a third-round pick, was expected to start the season for the Commanders. He was particularly impressive during training camp and in preseason games and would probably have taken the running back job from Antonio Gibson.
