(Los Angeles) American Marcos Giron won the first tournament of his career on Sunday by winning the final on the grass in Newport against his compatriot Alex Michelsen after saving a match point.
The 46e The world player, seeded No. 2, won in three sets 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-5 and 2 hours and 37 minutes against the 61e world player and succeeds Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the prize list.
Giron broke early, but lost the first set in the tiebreaker, before recovering, hitting 13 aces in the process, including one to save a match point in the third set and another to clinch the trophy.
Giron, who will celebrate his 31st birthday on Wednesday, climbs to 38e place in the ATP rankings, his best position. He was playing his third final on the ATP circuit, after those lost in San Diego in 2022 and in Dallas this year.
Michelsen, 19, was playing in his second final after losing last year on the same court in Newport to Mannarino. He is the youngest player since Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in Umag in 2021 and 2022 to reach two consecutive finals in the same ATP tournament.
