Newport Tournament | Gabriel Diallo ousted in first round

(Newport) Quebecer Gabriel Diallo lost 7-6 (4), 7-5 to Billy Harris in the first round of the grass court tournament in Newport, Rhode Island, on Tuesday afternoon.

Diallo, who occupies 165e world ranking, folded after two hours and 25 minutes against Harris, a qualified player who is ranked 116e world ranking, in this tournament of the ATP 250 series.

The 22-year-old tennis player had trouble with his serve against Harris, who dominated him with both his first and second serve.

The powerful six-foot-eight, 198-pound Montreal hitter nevertheless fired seven aces, except that he also committed six double faults during this duel.

The two tennis players exchanged three break points in total. Diallo converted only one of his eight opportunities, while the Briton broke his serve twice in eight chances.

The representative of the maple leaf also dominated his opponent 31-17 in terms of winning shots, but he committed almost twice as many direct errors as Harris (25-13).

In the next round, Harris will face American Mackenzie McDonald, who came from behind to beat Australian Rinky Hijikata 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

On the other hand, Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime will begin his singles tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland, against German Yannick Hanfmann on Wednesday.

Auger-Aliassime, the third seed in the tournament, has a bye into the second round. Hanfmann beat American Nicolas Moreno de Alboran 7-6 (2), 6-7 (2), 6-2 earlier Tuesday.
