Newfoundland and Labrador | Up to 85 cm expected in the province

(Saint John) Residents of eastern Newfoundland have not finished clearing snow as a major snowstorm has persisted in parts of the province since late Thursday.

Environment Canada is forecasting snowfall totals of up to 85 cm in the northern Avalon Peninsula, which includes the provincial capital of St. John’s.

An accumulation of 5 to 10 cm of snow is forecast for Saturday on the Burin Peninsula, while the southern Avalon Peninsula can expect winds up to 70 km/h and 10 to 20 cm of snow.

Snow is expected to gradually decrease in intensity and end in the afternoon on the southern Avalon Peninsula.

Meanwhile, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says a 46-year-old man was rescued after a swerve near the Trans-Canada Highway in Conception Bay South Friday evening.

The man attempted to walk home but became disoriented. He was found by police four hours later with the help of city snow removal vehicles.

He did not require medical attention.
