New Zealand | Auckland flood death toll rises to four

(Wellington) A fourth person has been found dead after record-breaking flooding hit Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, on Friday, police said on Sunday.

A drone located the lifeless body of a man in Onewhero, south of Auckland, about a kilometer from where he had been washed away.

Two people were first found dead on Friday evening in the northern outskirts of Auckland. On Saturday, a third victim was killed in the collapse of a house in downtown Auckland.

At a press conference on Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni said that around 3,000 homes remained without electricity and many others without water.

The number of homes without power stood at 24,000 on Friday, according to Transport Minister Michael Wood.

The state of emergency declared in the city of 1.6 million people is still in effect after downpours turned its streets into rivers and flooded its airport, on the ‘wettest day’ on record in Auckland , according to Premier Chris Hipkins.

The airport reopened to domestic flights on Saturday, and international flights were due to resume on Sunday.

For security reasons, two concerts by British pop star Elton John, which were scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Auckland as part of his farewell tour, had to be canceled.
