(New York) The New York Yankees and left-handed pitcher Carlos Rodón agreed Thursday to terms on a six-year, $162 million contract, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
The person confirmed the terms of the contract to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Rodón must pass a medical evaluation.
The Yankees settled their most pressing case when they persuaded the American League’s most valuable player, Aaron Judge, to stay in the Bronx on a nine-year, $360 million deal — the biggest contract ever as a free agent ever. in baseball history. The Yankees also signed first baseman Anthony Rizzo to two years on a $40 million deal.
But Rodón’s contract is an addition for the reigning American East Division champions.
Rodón went 14-8 this season with a 2.88 ERA in his only season with the San Francisco Giants. He set personal records for wins, starts (31), innings (178), and strikeouts (237). He was also named to the All-Star Team for the second straight time.
Just two years ago, Rodón was released from the Chicago White Sox after another injury-plagued season. He did, however, sign a one-year contract worth $3 million with his first major league baseball team. The southpaw then began to show the extent of his talent which made him the third pick in the 2014 Entry Draft.
Working with White Sox pitching coach Ethan Katz, Rodón went 13-5 with a 2.37 ERA in 24 starts in 2021. He pitched a scoreless, hitless game against the Cleveland Guardians in April.
The 30-year-old Floridian agreed to a two-year, $44 million contract with the San Francisco Giants in March. But he retired after one season, forgoing a $22.5 million salary for the following year and becoming a free agent.
