New York Mayor Eric Adams indicted for corruption and illegal campaign financing

The Democratic mayor of New York, Eric Adams, was indicted on five counts by the Manhattan federal prosecutor’s office, details a court document consulted Thursday September 26 by AFP. He is notably accused of “solicitation of illegal financing of an electoral campaign” and “corruption”, in an investigation linked to Turkey.

“He hid from the public that he was secretly showered with gifts” and maintained “the public in ignorance year after year”accused Manhattan federal prosecutor Damian Williams during a press briefing. Eric Adams, 64, has been targeted for months by this investigation into suspicions concerning the financing of his victorious campaign in 2021 to become the second African-American mayor in the history of New York.

The indictment mentions in particular acts of electronic fraud, illegal solicitation of campaign contributions from a foreign person and the acceptance of bribes from a Turkish official, in exchange for his influence. on a file for the construction of a skyscraper housing Turkey’s mission to the United Nations and its consulate general. Eric “Adams continued his corrupt dealings after he became mayor”it is specified in the document. Wednesday evening, after the announcement of his indictment, the mayor said he “innocent”.
