(New York) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is scheduled to attend the opening of the general debate of the 79the session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday in New York.
At the event, US President Joe Biden will deliver a speech as tensions in the Middle East and the war between Russia and Ukraine cast a shadow over the gathering. It will be the last time Mr Biden addresses the general assembly.
A senior administration official speaking behind the scenes said the speech will reflect Mr. Biden’s vision for how the world comes together to solve problems.
The official noted that when Biden took office nearly four years ago, he pledged to restore American leadership on the world stage. This speech will be an opportunity for him to talk about how that promise has produced results.
Trudeau is also scheduled to hold an informal discussion with Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Mr. Trudeau will also participate in high-level meetings on innovation for a sustainable future and combating extremism, as well as a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Mr Zelensky is scheduled to address a special meeting of the UN Security Council on Russia’s invasion of his country. He is scheduled to address the General Assembly again on Wednesday morning.
Russia has a permanent seat on the Security Council and has been heavily criticized for its aggression in Ukraine, which violates the UN Charter.
