(New York) Center fielder Brandon Nimmo remains with the New York Mets. The team that spends lavishly offered him a contract for the next eight seasons and 162 million US.
This was learned Thursday evening by the Associated Press from a source familiar with the matter. The deal has not been officially announced, as Nimmo has yet to successfully undergo a full medical examination.
Nimmo, however, wrote that he was happy to be back in New York on his social media.
An excellent first hitter in the role, Nimmo has a career average of .385 on bases. He enjoyed full autonomy for the first time.
Known for his hard work and big smile, Nimmo hit .274 in 2022, with 16 homers and 102 runs scored, a Mets-high and a personal best. Bothered by injuries in the past, Nimmo also set personal bests with 151 games played, in addition to producing 64 points.
Nimmo was the 13e overall pick of the 2011 draft. He had turned down a qualifying offer of 19.65 million for 2023 last month.
The 29-year-old baseball player from Wyoming made his big league debut in 2016. Since then, he has averaged .269/.385/.441 with 63 home runs and 23 triples and produced 213 runs in 608 games.
Nimmo’s return means all regular Mets staff, who made the playoffs for the first time since 2016 this season, are back.
However, the pitching staff still needs to be rebuilt. Although the team attracted Justin Verlander for the next two years, Jacob deGrom and Taijuan Walker took advantage of the autonomy to look elsewhere.
One thing is certain: the Mets may still have the highest payroll in the Majors, which was 273.9 million on August 31, before the bonuses were calculated.
