New York Foods | Max Scherzer on the injured list

(Pittsburgh) The New York Mets placed right-hander Max Scherzer on the 15-day disabled list because of what the team described as “left-sided oblique irritation.”

Posted at 12:10 p.m.

The listing is retroactive to Sept. 4, 24 hours after Scherzer left his start against the Washington Nationals due to discomfort after five innings of work.

The 38-year-old pitcher missed almost two months earlier this season with an injury to the same obliques. Scherzer assured that this injury is different and less severe.

Mets manager Buck Showalter expects Scherzer to miss at least one start, possibly two, to ensure the injury heals.

Scherzer was scheduled to start Friday’s game in Miami. The Mets have not identified his replacement at this time, but have recalled left-winger Alex Claudio from their AAA club Syracuse.

The three-time winner Cy-Young is 9-4 with a 2.26 ERA in 20 starts this season.
