New Year’s Day | Open or closed?

The opening hours of several establishments will be subject to changes for New Year’s Day. Here is an overview.


December 31st

For last minute purchases, most businesses, including big box grocery stores, will remain open with reduced hours.

However, libraries, permit counters and ecocenters will be closed all day. As for SAQ branches, they will close their doors at 5 p.m.

The Société de transport de Montréal network will operate according to the usual schedule, as will garbage collection, with the exception of certain boroughs where it could be brought forward or postponed.

1er January

Almost everything will be closed. Only essential businesses such as pharmacies, convenience stores, gas stations and certain small businesses will remain open.

Shopping malls and big box grocery stores will close, as will banks and post offices. SAQ and SQDC branches will remain closed until January 2.

On the leisure side, the Biodôme, the Insectarium, the Planetarium and the Botanical Garden will open to the public at 1 p.m. Cinemas will also be able to welcome customers, as will ski resorts.

As for the Société de transport de Montréal network, it will operate according to the statutory holiday schedule.
