New vehicle sales in Canada up 7% in 2021

After a 2020 marked by the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the auto industry has rebounded in 2021, but not as much as some had hoped due to semiconductor shortages and other supply issues .

With 1.66 million units, new vehicle sales in Canada were up 6.9% from the previous year, according to Automotive News Data Center. However, they remain around 300,000 units of the total recorded in 2019.

For the 13th year in a row, Ford led all other automakers in the country in 2021, selling 243,447 new vehicles. Toyota and General Motors follow with 225,215 and 217,475, respectively. As in the United States, the Japanese giant has managed to beat GM in Canada.

We would like to highlight the performance of the Hyundai-Kia group, which ranks fourth with 210,377 units. Kia even broke its Canadian sales record in 2021, selling 79,198 vehicles.

Among the brands that increased their sales the most, we note Genesis (212.5%), Chrysler (150.1%), Mitsubishi (46.9%), Tesla (37.3%), Porsche (29.7%) %) and Volkswagen (25.1%).

Conversely, Fiat (-65.4%), Dodge (-51.7%), Jaguar (-13.9%), Buick (-3.8%), MINI (-3%) and Chevrolet ( -2.6%) had a much more difficult year in 2021.

Unsurprisingly, Ford’s F Series (F-150 and Super Duty) remains the best-selling vehicle in the country with 116,401 units delivered. On the car side, the Honda Civic weathered the onslaught of the Toyota Corolla with sales of 43,556 units, retaining its crown for the 24th consecutive year.
