Baby Yoda is going to make his big screen debut. Jon Favreau is about to direct The Mandalorian & Groguwhich will enter production this year, Lucasfilm and Disney announced Tuesday.
Although no release date has been announced, this is news that will no doubt please “Star Wars” fans who haven’t had a new film since The Rise of Skywalker released in 2019.
The Mandalorian & Grogu will be a sequel to the popular series broadcast on Disney+, although no details were given on the actors. Pedro Pascal has played the masked bounty hunter on the small screen for three seasons. Dave Filoni will produce the new film alongside Jon Favreau and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
“I loved telling stories set in the rich universe created by George Lucas,” Jon Favreau said in a statement. The prospect of bringing The Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
Mme Kennedy added: “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni introduced two beloved new characters to ‘Star Wars,’ and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”
There are several other elements of the “Star Wars” universe in the works as well from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold and Dave Filoni, who is also developing the second season of Ahsoka.
