A new Russian drone attack left one dead and damaged port infrastructure in the Odessa region, in southern Ukraine, the country’s authorities said on Thursday, December 7. “The driver of one of the trucks was killed”the authorities said.

The district of Izmail, very close to the border with Romania, was attacked “for almost two hours”said an official from the regional authorities. “A warehouse, an industrial elevator and trucks burned”he added.

The Ukrainian Air Force says it has shot down 15 of the 18 Shahed drones (Iranian-made) launched by Russia on Thursday from Crimea, a peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014. These targeted the Odessa region, but also notably that of Khmelnytskyi, in western Ukraine, she added.

Russia has launched drone or missile attacks against Ukraine almost every night in recent months. The ports, used in particular for the export of Ukrainian agricultural products, constitute prime targets for Moscow. In recent months, kyiv has strengthened its anti-aircraft defense with new Western systems, and manages to destroy in flight the majority of explosive drones or missiles sent by Russia.
