On October 16, 2020, Samuel Paty was assassinated by a young terrorist, Abdoullakh Anzorov, 18 years old. The tragedy occurred a few days after the course of the history and geography professor at a college in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine in Yvelines who had shown caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed published by Charlie Hebdo during a moral and civil education lesson.
For several months, Valérie Igounet investigated the circumstances of the attack. The journalist and historian was supported by the designer Guy Le Besnerais. Their work resulted in a graphic novel: Black pencil, Samuel Paty, story of a teacherwhich appears this Friday, October 7.
Almost three years after the events, Valérie Igounet came to testify on the set of C to you this Thursday, October 5, 2023. Anne-Elisabeth Lemoine took the opportunity to return to this course which had divided the teaching staff. “Samuel Paty did not receive the support of some of his colleagues who disapproved of his method. Who initially criticized him for having pushed out some of his students” said the journalist.

Valérie Igounet took the opportunity to clarify that Samuel Paty had not been excluded by his colleagues. “I wouldn’t say it’s a lack of support. It’s true that when Samuel Paty made this move on October 5 the first time, he questioned himself as you say. Because he saw that some “The students were upset at being out. He questioned himself and they spoke with another history teacher. He concluded that it was perhaps a mistake.”recalled the author.
According to her, Samuel Paty had even shared it with his class: “He will say it openly in front of his students. As the days go by, we know that at one point there are 2 emails from 2 teachers who will explain that they do not agree with Samuel Paty’s method. Valérie Igounet also clarified during this intervention: “Samuel Paty was a highly appreciated, very active teacher. He wanted to introduce people to a universe, it wasn’t just the school curriculum. He went to the Institute of the Arab World, he made the students listen to crazy music“.
