New demonstrations took place in Iran, notably in Tehran and Mashhad, on Monday, September 19. Demonstrators protested the death of a young woman, arrested the previous week for ‘wearing inappropriate clothing’ by the vice squad, a unit responsible for enforcing the Islamic Republic of Iran’s strict dress code for women. Mahsa Amini fell into a coma after her arrest and died on September 16 in hospital, according to state television and her family.

Activists judged his death “suspicious” but Tehran police claimed there was no “didn’t have physical contact” between the police and the victim. His death, into which President Ebrahim Raisi has called for an investigation, sparked a wave of anger in Iran. After a rally on Sunday in Mahsa Amini’s hometown, other protests took place Monday at several universities in Tehran.

Police reject assault charges

Monday evening, in Hejab street (“muslim veil” in Persian), “several hundred people chanted slogans against the authorities”, announced the Fars agency. A short video released by the agency shows a crowd of several dozen people, including women who have removed their veils shouting “Death to the Islamic Republic”. “The police arrested several people and dispersed the crowd using truncheons and tear gas”added Fars.

“Many protesters are convinced that Mahsa died under torture”, according to the Iranian agency. Tehran’s police chief, General Hossein Rahimi, again rejected the “unfair accusations against the police”. “There was no negligence on our part. We conducted investigations. (…) And all the evidence shows that there was no negligence, or inappropriate behavior on the part of the police”he said.
