New production of Starmania | Something (still) is happening in Monopolis

In the streets of Paris, Morris columns reflect the images of the new production of starmania whose grand premiere will take place on November 8 at the Seine Musicale, a contemporary venue located far from the Grands Boulevards. On the posters, we focus on two things: the creators Luc Plamondon and Michel Berger, as well as the characters (Zéro Janvier, Marie-Jeanne, Cristal, etc.).

Forty-three years after its creation, this is how the famous rock opera is “sold”. It seems that this strategy is paying off, as tens of thousands of spectators have already purchased tickets to see this show, which suffered from some postponements due to COVID-19.

Qu’ont à dire en 2022 cet homme d’affaires assoiffé de pouvoir, cette animatrice de télé pondeuse de talents, cette star déchue, cette serveuse de café désœuvrée, cet homosexuel solaire et ce travesti machiavélique ?

Selon les premiers échos provenant des avant-premières présentées à Nice, à Marseille et à Nancy, leurs propos font encore mouche. Cette production, mise en scène par le très doué Thomas Jolly (il sera le maître d’œuvre de la cérémonie d’ouverture des Jeux olympiques de Paris en 2024), a tout pour séduire le jeune public. Et combler celui qui connaît par cœur les chansons.

Une solide présence québécoise

À part la première production, en 1979, qui comportait quelques noms connus (France Gall, Diane Dufresne), celles qui ont suivi ont contribué à catapulter de nombreux talents qui étaient inconnus. Et comme ce fut le cas pour les productions antérieures, plusieurs interprètes québécois apportent leur savoir-faire.

C’est à David Latulippe, ancien participant de La voix, qu’on a confié le personnage de Zéro Janvier et l’interprétation du fameux Blues du businessman. Miriam Baghdassarian, révélée elle aussi grâce à La voix, s’empare de Sadia. Pour sa part, Gabrielle Lapointe personnifie Cristal en alternance avec la chanteuse marocaine Lilya Adad. Quant à William Cloutier, grand gagnant de Star Académie 2021, il est la doublure de Johnny Rockfort interprété par le chanteur français Côme.

Figure connue des spectacles Band on Tour, Saturday Night Fever et Icons on Tour, David Latulippe vit un rêve éveillé. À la fin de 2019, il a auditionné pour obtenir le rôle de Ziggy après avoir vu une annonce sur Facebook. Cela s’est fait devant Luc Plamondon, Thomas Jolly et Rafaël Hamburger, fils de Michel Berger. « On m’a demandé si je connaissais une autre chanson de Ziggy, m’a-t-il raconté jeudi après une longue journée de répétition. J’ai répondu non, mais j’ai ajouté que je connaissais Le blues du businessman. »

Un choc a eu lieu. Les choses se sont ensuite déroulées très vite. David Latulippe a rechanté le lendemain devant le comité de sélection. « On m’a appelé le jour suivant pour me dire que j’étais leur Zéro Janvier. Je ne le croyais pas. »

Le chanteur de 31 ans a été très étonné de voir qu’on l’imaginait dans ce rôle plutôt que dans celui de Ziggy.

De son côté, Miriam Baghdassarian a été invitée par son agence (Musicor) à auditionner pour le rôle de Sadia. Elle a dû apprendre les chansons du personnage (Ce soir on danse à Naziland et Travesti) en deux jours. « C’était trop cool ! En plus, je me suis aperçue que Nanette Workman [qui a créé Sadia en 1979] was part of the committee. »

The 23-year-old singer has spent a lot of time studying her character. “With Thomas Jolly, we talked a lot. Sadia is a man who dreams of being a woman. This is a reality that we find a lot nowadays. I am happy to create a link between the younger generation and this work. »

A well-kept secret

In the greatest secrecy, the artists of starmania started working last July at the Seine Musicale. “The first few weeks were like a school,” says Miriam Baghdassarian. We spent three or four hours a day talking about the work and analyzing each song. »

The director Thomas Jolly approached this work as he does with the great authors he directs. Earlier this week, I heard him on France Inter say that this work by Plamondon has something Shakespearean about it. “Plamondon has the ability to put very simple words to complex emotions. »

Then, the troupe moved to Nice where the show was rehearsed and presented three times in front of an audience at the beginning of October. After years of waiting and months of work, the tension has finally subsided. “On the night of the premiere, I literally collapsed backstage after singing The businessman’s blues, says David Latulippe. I looked at the numbers of my classmates and I cried. It must be said that since the first evening, the Quebecer has been raising huge ovations after his performance.

There is no doubt that the young artists of this new version are living an extraordinary adventure. “It’s a new step in my career, recognizes David Latulippe. That said, I have no expectations. For the moment, I trip and I sing. »

Miriam Baghdassarian is aware that the adventure of starmania could last a very long time. “I focus on the job at hand. I haven’t really had time to think about what glory there might be in the end. If that happens, I will be welcoming and benevolent. »
