An Emirati, Ahmed Nasser Al-Raisi, is now the head of the international criminal police organization. Targeted by multiple complaints for “torture”, he will however be the face of this organization based in Lyon (Rhône).
Major General Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi is the new face of Interpol, elected with more than 70% of the vote. The influential UAE police chief is suspected of ordering and covering up acts of torture. “I was arrested at the airport and then placed in jail. I was drugged with drugs and I’m still addicted to it today.”, explains Matthew Hedges, tortured in prison in 2018 while a researcher in the field of politics.
A country that uses Pegasus software
The country is a gulf autocracy that practices mass surveillance of its population. The government uses Pegasus software to spy on its opponents and former detainees, even from overseas. “My phone is still monitored and my family’s too. We have felt a form of harassment for three years”, adds Mattew Hedges. Two complaints have already been filed against the new boss of Interpol, a third should follow.
